LEAD – Leading the Way!

Over the past two summers, Sugar Creek’s LEAD program (Leaders Engaged as Disciples) has been transforming high schoolers into confident, faith-filled leaders. This 4-week adventure gives participants real, hands-on experience in camp staff roles—from helping with on-site day camps to shadowing cabin counselors. It all wraps up with an incredible week of reflection, where LEADs figure out how to take their skills and faith back to make an impact in their home communities.

This summer, three former LEAD participants are officially joining our summer staff, and their impact is already making waves! Program Director Deacon Stephanie Engel has been hearing glowing feedback from pastors, youth directors, and community leaders about these young leaders’ transformations. They’ve returned home with confidence, a deeper faith, and a passion for serving others.

Here’s what some of our LEAD alumni have gone on to do:

●      Plan worship services for peers

●      Lead Bible studies

●      Mentor Sunday School students

●      Step up as mission trip leaders

●      Organize Vacation Bible School programs

The best part? Watching these young leaders grow. Week by week, they get louder, stand taller, and really start to bloom in their own unique ways. During the final week of reflection, so many LEADs say things like, “I didn’t know I could do this!” or “I had no idea I could make this kind of difference.”

Why LEAD at Sugar Creek?

One standout story? A LEAD who had never spent a night at camp without his family came back for session two and stayed the entire summer! That’s the kind of transformation outdoor ministry makes possible.

“Through this program, I learned how to be a leader, especially when working with kids. I discovered how much I enjoy helping them and making real connections.

One of the biggest things I learned was stepping out of my comfort zone. My personality grew tremendously, and I learned to keep pushing myself into the “yellow zone” where growth happens.

This experience also helped me understand that not everyone is in the same place in life. It taught me not to judge others and to recognize the power of small actions.

Even if I didn’t feel like I made a big impact, the person I helped might have felt something much greater—and that’s what matters.

I 100% recommend this program. I loved it so much, I did it twice!”
