NEWS

The Work Continues!

The new Dining Lodge is being used for summer camp programming and other events. Volunteers and professionals continue working to finish the building. The fireside room (above left) is nearing completion, and it looks great! The kitchen (above center) has new cabinets, wonderful convection ovens, and new prep space. The kitchen will be completed by the start of summer camp. In the basement, walls are going up in the new nurse's station (above right). Volunteers are helping complete this important project, and we hope to have the nurse's station ready by the start of summer camp.

New Stables Nearing Completion!

Our wonderful volunteer groups continue to log hours of work on the new horse stables. At the stables, the corral fence is finished, along with the horse stalls, hay loft, tack room, and mangers. In December, volunteers worked hard to complete the wooden lane and install light fixtures. Electrical and plumbing is currently being installed. Now nearing completion, the stables will be ready this spring. We will officially open the building with a barn dance on May 2. Click here for more info!

Sugar Creek Serves 90 families in family camp programs!

With 45 families at our traditional family camp, 16 families at Grandparent/Grandchild camp, 20 at our Mother/Daughter and Father/Son retreats, and another 9 at Parent/Child Horse Ranch, Sugar Creek's family camp programs continued to grow.  From Voyageur canoe trips on the Mississippi (above), to engaging Bible studies and fun campfires, to carnivals and service projects, Family Camp 2009 was an enriching experience for all.

Sugar Creek Campers Provide Meals for Thousands!

This summer, Sugar Creek campers are packaging more than 20,000 meals to be sent abroad to impoverished nations such as Haiti, Nicaragua, and Honduras. The program, called "Feed my Starving Children," is taking place in churches and camps throughout the country. Campers at Sugar Creek can donate some of their canteen money to purchase the food supplies (about 3,000 pounds of rice, soy protein, dry vegetables, and a vitamin mixture), and then they get to mix and package the food to be sent abroad. They heat seal each package with the knowledge that the next time it is opened, it will be by a hungry family. Thousands (perhaps tens of thousands) of children die every day as a result of malnutrition and starvation. Our program at Sugar Creek this summer gives campers a small chance to help.
